Perennial refers to plants that persist for several growing seasons.

It is a natural growth habit where the top portion of the plant (often, not always) dies back with each winter and regrows in the following spring.

The number of years a perennial is able to regrow depends greatly on the particular plant’s lifespan, as some “short-lived perennials” will only last three to four years before needing to be replanted.

Other “long-lived perennials” will last anywhere from fifteen years to a lifetime without needing to be replanted.
