What are the Environmental Education’s Guidelines for Excellence?
The guidelines are hosted by the North American Association for Environmental Education, and includes a range of workshop resources, guideline webinars and publications. There are quite a few resources to choose from across the guidelines based on what your position in environmental education is.
The concept is that the guidelines would set a standard for quality environmental education and literacy. The project was started in 1994 and continues to be developed as of the time of this writing. The most recent revision of this work is from 2025.
In the guidelines for excellence, you can select your audience and download the guidelines developed by NAAEE for that role. There is also a series of knowledge and skills resources for both in-person and virtual workshops.
Note that some resources are available for download or purchase, but purchase is not necessary to access the download.
Who is This For?
These guidelines for excellence are available for environmental educators of varied paths and roles, and the NAAEE website has a series of filters that you can find by navigating the website where you select the publication that’s right for you based on your audience.
What Do the Guidelines Contain?
The guidelines contain a wide range of information for educators on how they might best approach and design environmental education depending on their audience. There are also stories and examples of these guidelines in practice from other organizations, as well as references.
